Subject: Religion

A major theme this year is learning more about the Ten Commandments.

Growing in Jesus Christ
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.”

The Commandments help us to love God
“Lord teach me the way of Your laws: I shall observe them with care.” (Psalm 119:33)

The Commandments help us to love others
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)

We are called to Holiness.
“Do this in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:24)

Subject: ELA

This year, we are so excited to have acquired Pearson’s ReadyGEN Learning Resources, with a trade-book collection which contains a balance of literature and informational texts. This collection offers students an opportunity to continue exploring the unit topics through a variety of genres, poems, biographies and more.

ReadyGEN is an integrated literacy program that accelerates learning for all by presenting modeled reading experiences with authentic text. Students engage in practice, build motivation, and improve their reading stamina.

Writing in ReadyGEN follows the gradual realization of responsibility model, and each writing lesson in a module focuses on one writing type – narrative, informative or opinion.

  Unit 1 Becoming Researchers
Unit 2 Interactions in Nature and Culture
Unit 3 Exploring Impact and Effect
  Unit 4 Creating Innovative Solutions

Subject: Social Studies

New York State and local history and government.
Grade 4 Social Studies is focused on New York State and local communities and their change over time, incorporating the study of geography, history, economics and government.

Cooperative Learning

According to the theories of Lev Semenovich Vygotsky, and Sociocultural theory, “Students should be put in situations where they have to reach to understand, but where support from other students or the teacher is also available.  Sometimes the best teacher is another student who has just figured out how to solve the problem, because this student is probably operating in the learner’s zone of proximal development.  Students should be guided by explanations, demonstrations, and work with other students-opportunities for cooperative learning”

Global Intelligence

I make every effort to reach my student’s global intelligence. We learn in a variety of ways. Therefore, I try to include in my lessons a variety of activities that will help to get my students motivated. I love their essential humanity as it is expressed in their energy and wonder in the world.  The beauty of their innocence and generosity is both humbling and inspirational. They generate vitality and they demonstrate a hunger for learning that rewards every effort to teach them what they want to learn.  They can be distracted and impatient or they can be very patient when we, as teachers, have anticipated their needs and interests and we have striven to engage with them in their own learning process.
